Denmark and Ukraine: Together to a new level of social housing

An initiative has been launched in Denmark to promote the development of affordable social housing in Ukraine. The Ukrainian Housing for All Foundation, established in Denmark, plans to implement housing construction projects on Ukrainian land using Danish standards. It is expected that the implementation of these plans will be a step towards improving living conditions in cities affected by Russia’s military actions.

According to information posted on the fund’s website, the new project, jointly initiated by Danish and Ukrainian partners, aims to provide affordable housing in Ukraine. The Foundation plans to build sustainable, comfortable and energy-efficient houses, taking into account the peculiarities of the local population and cultural context.

The main idea of the project is to develop a housing concept that will take into account the needs of Ukrainian citizens, including refugees, and will be in line with their traditions. The initiative is of particular importance as the housing market in Ukraine needs to be reformed and new approaches introduced, as most housing is privately owned and access to it is limited.

The project envisages not only the construction of new residential complexes, but also the development of an economic model that will allow the rental income to be used for the further development of affordable housing. Work on the project has already begun in Mykolaiv region, where the first pilot projects adapted to local conditions are planned to be implemented.

In Denmark, the social housing system, known as alment boligbyggeri, provides affordable rental apartments. This housing can be owned by the state or managed by non-profit organizations. This approach allows for low and stable rents for young people, students, and families.

Today, about one million people in Denmark live in public housing, which is a significant part of the country’s population. The memorandum signed earlier between Denmark and Mykolaiv region will help restore the region and develop industry, which will facilitate the return of citizens who left the region due to the military operations.
